Mariah Carey Addresses The Iconic "I Don't Know Her" Meme, Makes It Even Better

"I was just being honest."

Mariah Carey unknowingly birthed the Internet's greatest meme quite some time before memes were even a thing when, in the early 2000's, she responded to a reporter's question about Jennifer Lopez with the kind of supreme and iconic celebrity shade she's perfected over the years.

"I don't know her," she said, smiling and shaking her head back and forth.

It was perfect. And it is perfect to use in any situation where you're asked for an opinion on a celebrity who's, well, beneath you.

This week, in an interview with The Cut, the elusive chanteuse spoke of the meme for the first time ever and perfected its backstory, saying she "was just being honest." No shade intended.

"Recently? I don’t know. [yawns] I’m sorry, I’m having a 'sleep' moment…," she said when asked to recall the "crazy presents" she's received from fans.

And then, it happened:

Well, there was a very interesting shirt that a fan made with a quote that I said years ago that, when I said it, I really wasn’t trying to be funny. I was just being honest and everybody’s kind of blowing it out of proportion but this guy had a shirt on and it was a picture of me that he made and the quote was underneath it — and I’m going to leave you hanging as to what it was.

The quote she's referring to is obvious but, for the life of her, she just can't remember who it was about. Does Mariah Carey even know her?
