All You Ever Wanted to Know About “All I Want for Christmas Is You”

Did Mariah Carey invent holiday cheer?

So how did Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” become the gift that will never stop giving?

Pour yourself some hot cocoa and cozy up to Amazon Music’s new mini-documentary, Mariah Carey Is Christmas: The Story of “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which focuses on the making of her beloved holiday anthem.

The 11-minute doc, unwrapping the festive tale of how Carey’s 1994 tune turned into a seasonal staple, includes new commentary from producer Randy Jackson, backup singer Trey Lorenz, top music journalists, and the pop diva herself.

“I just remember where I was coming from, as a writer and a producer, creating the song and wanting it to feel like a classic and a modern classic,” the five-time Grammy winner explains. “It was an accomplishment for me that I was really proud of.”

“All I Want for Christmas Is You” has reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first time; its previous peak was No. 3 during the 2018 holiday season. It’s only the second holiday song to reach No. 1 after The Chipmunks’ “The Chipmunk Song.” This gives Carey her 19th No. 1, extending her record for the most top spots for a solo act; only The Beatles have more No. 1s with 20.

Carey celebrated the 25th anniversary of her iconic holiday album, Merry Christmas, with a special deluxe edition release.

She also gifted fans with an updated “All I Want for Christmas Is You” video featuring unreleased footage from the original.

The elusive chanteuse wraps up her 2019 holiday tour tonight at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
