Mariah Carey Receives Standing Ovation Performing "Hero" At HRC Gala

Sick of seeing nonsense divorce headlines online, a glammed-to-the God's Mariah Carey stepped out at the Human Rights Campaign gala, effectively turning the focus away from her and onto LGBT rights.

Mimi brought the house down at the JW Marriott in Los Angeles on Saturday night performing her timeless classic, "Hero," earning a standing ovation in front of a crowd that included Matt Bomer, Empire's Jussie Smollett, Cheyenne Jackson, Lance Bass and Shonda Rhimes.

Carey first shared a story about her "guncles" with the crowd:

I was surrounded by all different types of people growing up and that’s why I had an open mind on lot of things. I think I was one of the first people to have ‘gunkles’ – you know, gay uncles..…

If I’m not allowed to say that – tell me now. I don’t want to hear ‘She was offensive, she was rude.’ I’m talking about two people who might as well have ben married. They were my template for a great relationship. And they were my mom’s real friends and when there was a snow storm…we walked up to their house. They took care of us. Their dog Sparkle…he was our friend.

Really, honestly, I can’t thank everybody for just human rights, in general. For just caring about all people and …that’s what this song is about.”

The songstress is having quite a moment, having earlier in the week signed a contract with Epic Records reteaming her with producer L.A. Reid for a multi-album deal set to begin with a greatest-hits that will coincide with her upcoming residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
