Mariah Carey To Be Honored At GLAAD Media Awards In New York

Lee Daniels will present Mimi with the group's Ally Award.

Mariah Carey will be honored at the 27th annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York on May 17.

Carey will be presented the honor by Lee Daniels, who directed her breakout performance in Precious. Previous GLAAD Media Awards honorees include Elizabeth Taylor, Patti LaBelle, Janet Jackson and Cher.

“Through her music and outspoken support, Mariah Carey has inspired and empowered countless LGBT fans across the globe," said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “She is a longtime ally and friend to the LGBT community who has worked tirelessly to move acceptance and inclusion forward."

An outspoken ally to the LGBT community, Mariah says the gay couple she knew as a girl were "my template for a great relationship." In 2009, she invited a fan up on stage to propose to his boyfriend. She has also devoted her time to causes including Save the Music, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, World Hunger Relief, and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

This summer, Carey continues her residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and launches her E! docu-series Mariah's World.

Robert De Niro will receive the Excellence in Media Award at the New York ceremony, which will be hosted by Laverne Cox.
