Mark Ronson Sorry He Came Out as Sapiosexual, Says He’s Straight

"I do not consider myself part of any marginalized community."

Mark Ronson has issued an apology for coming out as sapiosexual.

The 44-year-old DJ and music producer came under fire last week on social media after he referred to himself as sapiosexual during a chat on ITV’s Good Morning Britain.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the Oscar-winning Lady Gaga collaborator now admits he was “not informed enough” to use the word, which describes an attraction to intelligence over gender.

Ronson, who is promoting his new album, Late Night Feelings, explains that he had followed a Good Morning Britain segment about French equality minister Marlèna Schiappa, who identifies as sapiosexual. Prepping Ronson for his interview, producers explained to him backstage that the term meant being attracted to a person's intellect. “That sounds great," he responded. "Of course, who wouldn’t be?”

"I didn’t know that there was a word for it," Ronson later told the hosts, "but yes, I feel like I am identifying as sapiosexual.” They then applauded Ronson for being “out and proud.”

“It sounds like I went on a TV show to be like, ‘Guys, I have some big news,’" Ronson tells Rolling Stone. "And the fact that I would ever go on and sort of declare myself—as like a heterosexual white male—like a part of any marginalized community was like terrifying to me, or just like embarrassing.” He added, “I do not consider myself part of any marginalized community, and I apologize if anyone misunderstood or took offense to it.”

Ronson wasn't initially concerned about backlash because he believed people would look past clickbait headlines and understand the context of his comments. “But that’s not what happens on Twitter anymore,” he says.

Ronson, who recently divorced French actress Joséphine de La Baume, has also been romantically linked to Rashida Jones and singer Samantha Urbani.
