Marky Mark Made Me Gay (A Celebration)

Feel it, baby? I can, too.

If it weren’t for Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, then I might not be gay. Seriously!

I was twelve when Mark “Marky Mark” Wahlberg dropped the video for his number one single “Good Vibrations,” and all those shots of his perfect chest and abs made me feel special feelings. Feelings I didn’t quite understand. Feelings that made me tape the video off the living room TV and then secretly watch it when my parents were asleep. (That tape also included footage from a men’s beach volleyball tournament.)

Today is the perfect day to celebrate that awakening. As the good people at MTV’s Clutch Blog reminded us, today is Mark Wahlberg’s 42nd birthday.

Now that he’s an Oscar-nominated Hollywood star, Wahlberg doesn’t talk much about his hip-hop past, but I will never forget. And not only because I will always treasure this sexy video. To this day, people still call me “Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch,” and they always think they’re the first person to use that nickname. That’s the lifelong burden for people named Mark who were in school in 1991. But I bear the burden proudly.

And now… let’s get funky with this video.

Mark Blankenship tweets as @IAmBlankenship. He’s got that sweet sensation.
