Meet the Logo30: Marti Gould Cummings

The dragtivist changing New York politics.

Every day during the month of June, we will be spotlighting our 2018 Logo30. The powerful series profiles ordinary and extraordinary people who show pride in unique and provocative ways. Visit the Logo30 homepage to learn more about the series.

Drag and politics don’t always mix, but for New York’s Marti Gould Cummings the two go hand in hand. Inspired by the results of the 2016 presidential election, Cummings founded HK Dems, which last year helped elect a new district leader in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan.

Cummings finds political inspiration from historical figures like Harvey Milk, who even though he kept losing election after election, kept trying because “he knew it was something he was born to do,” Cummings tells NewNowNext.

“It’s not about winning the election, it’s about giving the people the opportunity to have a voice. I think Harvey practiced what he preached, and I really look up to that.”

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was "just the cutest thing ever."
