Marvel's "Runaways" Season 2 Has Big Plans for Its Groundbreaking Queer Couple

We haven't seen the last of Karolina and Nico!

Marvel's Runaways was a hit with fans when the first season premiered last November. The show, focusing on six former friends who are brought together after they find out their parents are part of an evil organization, will continue with its second season on December 21.

What made the series stand out in the overcrowded sea of superhero shows was the relationships between the teenagers, specifically the budding romance between Karolina (Virginia Gardner) and Nico (Lyrica Okano), both queer female characters. While changes are on the horizon for Season 2—including connecting the show's events to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe—its been confirmed that Runaways will continue to center Karolina and Nico's relationship.

Runaways co-showrunner Josh Schwartz spoke with TVLine about how closely Karolina and Nico will impact the team, saying their dynamic will be "in a large way, the emotional core" of Season 2.

"They’re going to be struggling not just with trying to save the world," adds co-showrunner Stephanie Savage, "but how to have an appropriate teenage relationship in such an adult situation."

Season 2 of Runaways will premiere on December 21 on Hulu.
