Buried deep in this article from the Maryland Gazette is the real lede in the story of what, exactly, made Maryland state delegate Don Dwyer embrace alcohol to the point of drunkenly crashing a boat one day last August and fracturing the skull of a five-year-old girl, and injuring himself and others.
Gays. Gays, gays, gays, gays, gays. The gays did it.
Specifically, gay marriage did it. Dwyer drank because of gay marriage (oh, and his divorce). So says the article:
“He said two events caused his drinking to increase: First, he separated from his wife in November 2011. Second, he felt ‘betrayed’ by longtime allies in the State House…Dwyer says he felt sold out when Dels. Tiffany Alston, Wade Kach and Bob Costa voted for same-sex marriage, an issue he spent years crusading against. Dwyer told reporters one day before the vote that he had enough support to block the bill.”
To reiterate: Dwyer wrecked his 27-foot powerboat and then admitted to having been drunk when he did so. His blood alcohol tested at three times the legal limit. Now, the Maryland Republican is opening up about why he turned to the bottle in the first place and blames his wife and gay marriage.
In a perfect world, Dwyer’s divorce occurred after a sexy female boat captain whisked his wife away to get gay married in a tasteful but extremely homosexual ceremony at the Maryland statehouse presided over by each of the representatives who Dwyer says betrayed him.
But, to be fair, two of the lawmakers who Dwyer thought would help him defeat equal marriage in Maryland–Dels. Kach and Costa–were the only two Republicans in Maryland’s House of Delegates to vote for the bill in February.
And the bill subsequently passed in the House. By two votes.
That must have hurt, Donny. Maybe as much as those injuries you caused yourself and four children when you crashed that boat.
But did it hurt as much as unequal treatment hurts millions of LGBT Marylanders? Oh, wait, that doesn’t matter anymore…
Dwyer is charged with drunken boating and violating nautical regulations.
He has fully recovered from the injuries he sustained in the crash but in an effort to recover from his political injuries, Dwyer asks that his constituents forgive him for his poor decision-making. Watch him do so, just after the August crash, below (note the pissy way he directs the woman to steer his wheel chair).
