Matt Bomer To Star As 1930s Hollywood Mogul In Amazon Pilot "The Last Tycoon"

He'll bring old time Hollywood glamour back

Less than a year after he wrapped a six-season run on White Collar, Matt Bomer is set to headline another series, hopefully one that will require less bloodletting but just as much clothes-shedding as his current stint on American Horror Story: Hotel.

Deadline is reporting that Matt will lead the Amazon drama pilot The Last Tycoon, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s final unfinished novel. It will be written and directed by Captain Phillips writer Billy Ray.

Inspired by the life of film mogul Irving Thalberg, on whom the book’s protagonist Monroe Stahr was based, The Last Tycoon centers on Stahr (Bomer), Hollywood’s first wunderkind studio executive in the 1930s as he climbs to the height of power pitting him against his mentor and current head of the studio Pat Brady, a character based on Louis B. Mayer. With Stahr as a focal point, the series delves into the true violence, sex and towering ambition of Hollywood in the ’30s.

The Last Tycoon was previously brought to the screen in 1976, directed be Elia Kazan, and starring Robert DeNiro as Monroe Stahr.

That adaptation was not well-received (it holds a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes), so maybe this version can bring new life to Fitzgerald's swan song.

In Matt Bomer, they definitely have the right man for the job. No actor working today can provide the Old Hollywood look and glamour that Matt can.

But Matt is more than just a pretty face, so hopefully a meaty role like this (coupled with his award-winning work in The Normal Heart) can help take him to the next level of leading man stardom.
