Matt Damon Thinks Gay Actors Should Stay In The Closet

For the sake of their career

When it comes to Hollywood superstars, Oscar winner Matt Damon has led one of the least tabloid-worthy, rarely making a misstep when it comes to the publicity machine. But that changed a few weeks ago with his tone-deaf comments to black filmmaker Effie Brown, attempting to explain how diversity works on the set of Project Greenlight.

It was a definite foot-in-mouth moment, for which he apologized, but then credited himself for sparking a conversation on the subject, which of course, has actually been part of the Hollywood conversation for eons.

Now Matt has done an interview with The Guardian in which he talks about the gay rumors that persisted about him and Ben Affleck after their joint Oscar win for Good Will Hunting, saying "It’s just like any piece of gossip ... and it put us in a weird position of having to answer, you know what I mean? Which was then really deeply offensive. I don’t want to, like [imply] it’s some sort of disease – then it’s like I’m throwing my friends under the bus."

But he remembers one actor in particular who had a hard time with maintaining his career after coming out publicly, lamenting "But at the time, I remember thinking and saying, Rupert Everett was openly gay and this guy – more handsome than anybody, a classically trained actor – it’s tough to make the argument that he didn’t take a hit for being out.”

He feels for actors who have a tough time with it, saying “I think it must be really hard for actors to be out publicly,” but thinks all actors should refrain from any acknowledgment of their sexuality, offering “But in terms of actors, I think you’re a better actor the less people know about you period. And sexuality is a huge part of that. Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play.”
