Matt Smith And Zosia Mamet Cast As Robert Mapplethorpe And Patti Smith In New Biopic

Buffy The Vampire Slayer's Eliza Dushku is producing.

Doctor Who's Matt Smith and Girls' Zosia Mamet have landed the coveted roles of avant-garde photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and punk icon Patti Smith in the upcoming biopic Mapplethorpe.

The film is being written/directed by two-time Sundance's Grand Jury Prize winner Ondi Timoner, whose last film, BRAND: A Second Coming, focused on Russell Brand's evolution from addict & Hollywood star to unexpected political disruptor.

According to Deadline, Timoner is co-producing the film with Sirad Balducci and Buffy the Vampire Slayer's second most iconic slayer, Eliza Dushku.

Mapplethorpe Foundation is backing the biopic which is expected to begin production this summer in New York City.

The film is the second Mapplethorpe-related project in the works, with HBO announcing the documentary Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures, set to air this April.

That film, directed by Drag Race producers Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbaro, will coincide with simultaneous retrospectives at The Getty Museum and The Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

“Even his most shocking and forbidden images are included without blurs, without snickers — in other words, exactly as the artist intended,” Bailey and Barbaro said.
