Rep. Maxine Waters has become such an internet celebrity that she is now known by a popular nickname: Auntie Maxine and phrases that she says can be transformed into massive club hits.
On Friday’s episode of The View, Waters joined the talk show co-hosts for a roundtable discussion on politics, but since it was Auntie Maxine, the women had to bring up her online popularity—including her new hit single, “Reclaiming My Time.”
“I’m so surprised about the way that the millennials have connected with me,” Waters told the hosts. “It seems that I say things that they like!”
The View women asked Waters if she had heard the gospel version, by musician and singer Mykal Kilgore, of her already classic line, “reclaiming my time,” and she revealed that she had.
“I was shocked,” she said. “I can’t believe first of all, that he’s a good singer, he’s excellent…” Then before she could get another word out, a familiar voice was heard from the audience as Kilgore appeared to sing his gospel cover in person.
The entire studio audience clapped along to his rendition while Waters was visibly moved, swaying along to his smooth voice.
In another segment of the episode, Waters was asked about rumors of her running for president in 2020, but she sadly told the audience that those are “just rumors.”
“The only thing I’m running for is the impeachment of Trump,” she said as the audience cheered.
Oh, Auntie Maxine, never change.
