Today is October 3, better known as National Mean Girls Day—the day Aaron Samuels asked Cady what day it was.

It's got us thinking about mean-girls movies in general—those films that pit women against each other. Usually the heroine is the innocent party, but sometimes she gives as good (or better) than she gets. And Hollywood sure loves its mean girls—whether they're the Heathers, the Plastics or the Deadly Vipers.

Of course, competition can be a great thing—but it can also lead to ruined friendships, eating disorders, and occasional, death.

1. Mean Girls (2004)

Let's just get this one out of the way. Mean Girls has set the standard for intense female rivalry, and is practically the Bible of teen bitchiness. Extra points for being able to make future-trainwreck Lindsay Lohan believable as a plucky and impressionable girl battling the nasty It Girls.

2. Showgirls (1999)

Nomi Malone's battle with aging Las Vegas star Cristal Connors is the stuff of legends—and a HR nightmare of epic proportions.

3. The Women (1939)

In this Golden Age classic, Mary Haines (Norma Shearer) has to paint her nails jungle red to take down predatory salesgirl Crystal Allen (Joan Crawford), who's hooked her claws in to Mary's husband.

4. Clueless (1995)

The source material for Amy Heckerling's iconic 90s teen comedy, Jane Austen's Emma, was published in 1815. But its tale of misconstrued romance, bitchy classmates and enduring friendship is timeless. (At least Iggy Azalea thinks so.)

5. Gone With The Wind (1939)

Old Hollywood charm meets antebellum shade in this cinematic treasure: Vivien Leigh stars as a manipulative southern belle Scarlett O'Hara, who wouldn't let a little thing like the Civil War keep her from stealing Ashley Wilkes away from her sister-in-law Melanie.

6. Heathers (1988)

This shockingly dark comedy starred Winona Ryder as a lovable—if somewhat homicidal—teen heroine set on taking down the very clique she once belonged to (a recurring theme in mean-girls movies.)

7. Jawbreaker (1999)

Rose McGowan is the head bitch in charge in this cult classic about a prank gone horribly wrong.

8. Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)

It doesn't get much more competitive than the glamorous world of beauty pageants. (Just ask Alyssa Edwards and Coco Montrese.) Starring Kirsten Dunst, Kirstie Alley, Denise Richards, Brittany Murphy, Allison Janney and Amy Adams, this underrated gem demonstrated the murderous lengths some women will go to to make it to the top—explosive tractors, parade-float arson and tainted seafood among them.

9. All About Eve (1950)

The toughest kind of competition to beat is the kind you don't see coming: Bette Davis owned every inch of the screen as Margot Channing, the stage queen blindsided by "poor Eve."

10. Kill Bill, Volumes One and Two (2003- 2004)

Competition can be a killer—sometimes literally. Quentin Tarantino's two-part masterpiece sees Uma Thurman take down her former assassin partners in a bloody quest for revenge.

11. Cruel Intentions

Played to mean-girls perfection by Sarah Michelle Gellar, bitchy socialite Kathryn Merteuil was one twisted sister, enlisting Ryan Phillipe to screw with Selma Blair and Reese Witherspoon—both literally and figuratively.
