Meet India's First Transgender Police Officer

"Yashini must reach the finish line, and not be stopped and disqualified in the middle."

25-year-old K Prithika Yashini is set to became India’s first-ever transgender sub-inspector for the police force in the southern-most state of Tamil Nadu.

Yashini had originally applied for the post in February, but was rejected by the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board citing their lack of having what they call a third gender category.

After a 9-month battle, the First Bench, consisting of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana, yesterday directed the board to officially recruit Prithika.

The Madras High Court also asked the state's TNUSRB to include a separate category for transgender men and women in their next recruitment process.

"We are sure that by the time the next recruitment process is carried out, TNUSRB would have taken corrective measures for including the third gender as a category," said the judges. "The social impact of such recruitment cannot be lost sight of, as it would give strength to the case of transgenders. Yashini must reach the finish line, and not be stopped and disqualified in the middle."

Though Tamil Nadu police already has three transgenders on their rolls as constables, as noted by the Times of India, Yashini will be the first transgender-officer in the force.

Congratulations K Prithika!
