Meet The Gays Of "Fort Tilden"

Okay, fine, one of them is straight, but like, kinda bi-curious.

The new indie comedy Fort Tilden has drawn a lot of comparisons (Girls, Broad City, Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion), and while it no doubt shares DNA with these other similarly-framed "wacky misadventures of young women" exploits, what sets Fort Tilden apart is the fiery performances of its relatively unknown 20-something cast.

While the movie centers around besties-on-the-brink Allie (Clare McNulty) and Harper (Bridey Elliott), there's no shortage of gay best friends, or, in this iteration, gays sipping/spilling tea in the park.

"Fort Tilden gets a lot of attention for being a girl-heavy movie but most (straight) people don't pick up on the fact that half of the film's DNA is gay," says the film's co-writer/co-director Charles Rogers. "I am not sure how that goes over people's head given the amount of talk about cum and the prevalence of French macarons."

Rogers was a staff writer on Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp alongside the other half of the Tilden co-writing/co-directing team, Sarah-Violet Bliss.

Together, over the course of 18 days and a budget Rogers describes as "women-and-children-first survive at all costs," they shot the film.

Below, we chat with the many gays (okay, fine, one is technically straight) of Fort Tilden.

John (portrayed by John Early)

Charles Rogers: "John is a little bit dopey and probably doesn't have much of a life purpose, but that doesn't stop him one bit from emphatically lecturing everyone on what's best for their own journey."

John Early: "John lives in a constant state of paranoia about his status in Benji's posse, but at the moment is more focused on drinking his bubble tea without looking like he's sucking a dick."

Ashley (portrayed by Max Jenkins)

Charles Rogers: "Ashley is a keen, sharp-shooting alpha-gay, ever ready to get under the skin of anyone he designates a temporary opponent. If he hurt your feelings, that's on you."

Max Jenkins: "Ashley shares a flammable sexual connection with Benji. He has never traveled outside the United States. He murdered a man in Milwaukee when he was seventeen years old."

Grant (portrayed by Evan Hoyt Thompson)

Charles Rogers: "Grant may not have a lot of strong opinions or quick wit like John and Ashley, but he's handsome and that really ups their pretty game which is vital for social legitimacy."

Evan Hoyt Thompson: "All his life Grant has laughed and nodded his pretty little head when he didn't understand what people were talking about around him. Which has averaged to approximately 80% of the time. Let's just say he's nobody's lifeline on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and he'd be the first to tell you guys don't fuck him for his winning personality. His friends know better than to ask for his opinion; his looks, money & fashion sense are all he's got."

Benji (portrayed by Peter Vack)

Charles Rogers: "Benji isn't gay but that doesn't mean he wasn't born with an insatiable thirst for male attention, always dangling a carrot in front of his harem of bitches with his lithe frame and sexual hair."

Peter Vack: "Benji doesn’t just sell drugs, Benji is drugs. If Benji is not receiving love then he is not Benji. Benji has read every novel by Phillip Roth twice. Benji is usually unavailable."

Samrat (portrayed by Debargo Sanyal)

Charles Rogers: "Samrat is an opportunistic Indian cab driver who fetishizes the accouterments of his own luxury vehicle. Samrat probably isn't gay but since when do you really know your cab driver's sexuality?"

Debargo Sanyal: "Even though he has a wife and kid at home, he sometimes secretly hooks up on the DL with John in the backseat of his cab and John enjoys nuzzling up against Samrat's whiskers while cuddling."
