Meet The Japanese Youth Embracing Genderless Fashion

"Fashion and makeup can change you. They changed me."

A new style trend in Tokyo has Japanese teens embracing androgyny, mixing makeup, skirts, and platform shoes, with baseball caps, bow ties, and flannels to create defiantly androgynous looks for both boys and girls.

A video from i-D magazine features young people who embrace "genderless fashion" explaining the movement and how they're challenge traditional gender norms.

"Genderless fashion means that men don't have to look like men, and women don't have to look like women," says one young man. "Before the term 'genderless' existed, guys had been wearing skirts anyway. Now that people are more aware of the trend, I think it's growing."

Another teen explains that after he saw the term "genderless boy" trending on Twitter, he starting wearing makeup and shopping for clothes with his older sister.

His new look didn't go over well with classmates.

"My school doesn't understand genderless culture," he explains. "When I wear tight trousers, they sometimes call me 'faggot' or they say, 'Isn't he gross?' as I walk past. But if you care about other people's opinion then you become boring. So I'd rather stand out and be different."

A young woman in a skirt with sneakers and an oversized hoodie says, “Ever since I started dressing this way, I have a lot more fun, and I feel a lot more free.”

She got into genderless fashion after mistaking an androgynous female model on TV for a man. "He was really cool," she explains. "It wasn't until later that I realized she was a girl. I really admired her."

"I don't mind people calling me a 'genderless girl,'" she adds. "In fact I'm happy when they do."

Initially her parents took issue with her fashion choices, but she says, "My strong determination got me through it."

Another boy confesses that he's sometimes jealous of girls when it comes to fashion: "They can wear both trousers and skirts without being told off."

"Whenever boys wear ladies' clothes, people say 'Gross.' I think that's very strange."

Several of the teens also share their hopes that genderless fashion might help others open their minds and embrace a more accepting worldview.

"Fashion and makeup can change you," one says. "They changed me. That's something I want to share with people."
