What can’t Megan Rapinoe do?
The 2019 World Cup–winning soccer player and fierce advocate for equal pay in women’s sports has posed for her first luxury fashion ad, for the French label Loewe. The campaign in question was shot by legendary fashion photographer Steven Meisel, who captured Rapinoe looking “self-expressive but in a cheeky way,” according to the superstar athlete.
Speaking to CNN Style about the campaign, Rapinoe said she’s an “emotional dresser,” and that she’s always down to do “something outside of sport, particularly in fashion.”
“I’m all over that,” she said. “Particularly in the context of women’s sports, where I feel we’re very boxed in. ’Okay fine, you’re the gay activist one.’ Or there are always different ways that we’re seen—they’re not always bad. But we’re seen through the lens that our sponsors or society or U.S. Soccer wants to put us through. For me, [fashion] is my way of getting to do and look and express myself exactly the way that I want to.”
Rapinoe has flexed her muscles off the soccer field before. In 2018, the 34-year-old soccer champ posed with her girlfriend, basketball player Sue Bird, for a smokin’-hot photo series in ESPN magazine’s Body Issue.
The queer footballer also broke ground in Sports Illustrated’s May 2019 Swimsuit issue, in which she became the first openly gay woman to bare it all for the magazine’s annual feature.
But wait, there’s more!
Rapinoe also made a surprise appearance as herself in Episode 3 of The L Word: Generation Q, guesting on Alice Pieszecki’s (Leisha Hailey) eponymous celebrity talk show.
