Megan Rapinoe on Her Iconic Goal-Scoring Pose: "It's Kind of a F*ck You, But Nice"

"...it was sort of saying to Trump that you will not steal our joy from us as a team, as the LGBTQ community, as America."

Megan Rapinoe is here, queer, and ready to fight for what she believes in.

In conversation with The New York Times Magazine's David Marchese, the out soccer star of the U.S. Women's National Team got real about why sports need to be political in 2019. She has little sympathy for those who still believe athletes should remain apolitical, she confessed. She's not afraid to engage the POTUS—as she's proven in the past—but that doesn't mean Rapinoe is about to waste her time, either:

A lot of people have said, “Why don’t you make a demand of the president that he’ll sit down and talk with you if go to the White House?” But I’m not going to be naïve and think that I’m going to sit down with Trump and he’s going to change his mind. There are children locked up at the border who are dying, and that’s not fazing him. So why would I faze him?

In fact, Rapinoe noted that her goal-scoring celebration—an arms-wide pose (pictured above) that's become her signature of sorts—was "kind of a [fuck] you, but nice" to her adversaries, including Trump.

"It was probably born out of a little arrogance," she told the magazine. "Like, Are you not entertained? What more do you want? And it was sort of saying to Trump—but more to detractors in general—that you will not steal our joy from us as a team, as the LGBTQ community, as America."

Rapinoe also chatted about her girlfriend, fellow athlete Sue Bird of the WNBA's Seattle Storm. The two first met at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil. Since then, they've become something of a gay sports power couple, posing together in ESPN's super-inclusive (and smoking hot) 2018 Body Issue.

"Actually, my manager had tasked me with finding someone for Sue in Seattle," Rapinoe recalled. "I said, 'I’m on it.' Then a week later I was like, I have someone for Sue: Hand up emoji. We’ve been together ever since."

Now that's a score.
