Megan Rapinoe Signs Deal to Write Not One, But Two Books

The soccer star will write a memoir for adults, and a middle grade book about social justice and empowerment.

Soccer star Megan Rapinoe has landed a deal to write two books for Penguin Press.

The co-captain of the U.S. Women's National Team will write a memoir about her life both on and off the field, as well as a "middle grade" book about "social justice and change and the power young people have within their own communities and the world at large," according to a release from the publisher.

The adult book, set to hit shelves in fall 2020, will, according to Penguin, be "a perfect vehicle for a honest, thoughtful, unapologetic, idealistic discussion of women, social justice, role models, gay issues, nationalism, and even a little soccer."

Rapinoe led her team to a World Cup victory this year, winning both the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball for her dominant performance. She also made headlines for her feud with President Donald Trump.

During an appearance on CNN with Anderson Cooper, she told the president to "do better" and stop "excluding" people.

Neither of the upcoming books have a title as of yet. The middle grade book will come out after the memoir, under the Penguin imprint Razorbill.

“A lot of women, great women soccer players, have written memoirs,” Penguin Press president and editor-in-chief Ann Godoff told The New York Times. “Megan has a different platform.”

Godoff added that while watching the World Cup she thought, "Here’s a woman who is comfortable in her own skin," and said her children were also excited by Rapinoe's authenticity.

"She’s just operating from this very honest and straightforward and ‘This is who I am’ place. I think that’s what many people aspire to.”

“I hope this book will inspire people to find what they can do, and in turn inspire other people around them to do the same,” said Rapinoe.
