Fans of the Joan Rivers were upset when the legendary comic was left off the Oscars annual "In Memoriam" segment Sunday night. But in doing so, the show's producers brought a great deal of attention to the late legend anyway.

Daughter Melissa Rivers responded to the snub on her mother's Facebook page  with dignity and grace: "It would have been nice, especially considering the impact she had on the awards season, but [my son] Cooper and I have been overwhelmed with support and love over my mom's passing and we choose to focus on that."

Joan's glaring omission from the segment drew widespread criticism on social media, to which The Academy responded in a statement to USA Today:

Joan Rivers is among the many worthy artists and filmmakers we were unfortunately unable to feature in the In Memoriam segment of this year's Oscar show. She is, however, included in our In Memoriam gallery on Oscar.com.

In the end, the comic-actress-writer-director received a beautiful homage before E!'s red carpet coverage: A video segment introduced by her Fashion Police co-host Giuliana Rancic, who reminded us all "This is our first Oscars without the lady who immortalized the question 'Who are you wearing?'"
