Jared Leto draws raves for Dallas Buyers Club, Colby Keller reflects on being an introverted porn star, Ricky Martin to record FIFA World Cup theme song
After several days of outrage over Batwoman not being allowed to marry in the comics, DC has finally come out with a reason of sorts. DC co-publisher Dan DiDio spoke at the panel at DC Nation in Baltimore, and addressed the elephant in the room. “Heroes shouldn’t have happy personal lives. They are committed to being that person and committed to defending others at the sacrifice of their own personal interests. That’s very important and something we reinforced. People in the Bat family their personal lives basically suck. Dick Grayson, rest in peace—oops shouldn’t have said that,—Bruce Wayne, Tim Drake, Barbara Gordon and Kathy Kane. It’s wonderful that they try to establish personal lives, but it’s equally important that they set them aside. That is our mandate, that is our edict and that is our stand.”
Lesbian Russian journalist Masha Gessen is leaving the country with her wife, headed to the United States now that the fall of DOMA means she can sponsor her for a green card. But she says that the only hope for majority of the GLBT population in Russia is asylum abroad. “It’s high time to talk about asylum. The only way at this point that the U.S. can help Russian gays and lesbians is get us the hell out of here.”
It was rumored on Saturday, and now it’s official, Bruno Mars will be the halftime performer at the Super Bowl, held this year in New Jersey, which is causing some outrage that a more NY/NJ act wasn’t chosen.
The International Olympic Committee may not be able to do anything about the safety of gay spectators and athletes in Sochi, but they did vote to restore the gayest looking of all sports, wrestling, to the games.
Tom Daley has come out – and said that he’s not gay. “I’m not. But even if I was, I wouldn’t be ashamed. It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest what people thought. But I can understand why I have a massive gay following – I spend most of my life half naked in trunks on a diving board showing off my bare chest. I often joke I wear more to bed than I do to work. But I’m cool with my gay following. It’s great to have gay fans even though my friends gently take the mick. If people think I am gay or that I don’t focus on my diving enough and go out too much, there is always going to be an opinion – and if I worry about that too much, then my diving goes downhill.”
Charlie Hunnam isn’t worried about the sex scenes in Fifty Shades of Grey, mostly because of his turn on Queer as Folk. “My first job was on a Channel 4 miniseries called Queer as Folk. [There were] incredibly explicit sexual scenes with a man. I mean, I’m 16- and 17-years wiser now. So if I could do it when I was 18 with a guy, I can certainly do it at 33 with a lady.” I’m not thrilled with the phrasing, but I get his point.
Jared Leto (and Matthew McConaughey) are both getting rave reviews for their performances in Dallas Buyers Club. Leto plays an HIV+ transsexual in the film, and slimmed down to scary proportions for the role. “I stopped eating. It was 30 or 40 pounds. After a while I stopped counting. It changes the way you walk, the way you sit, the way you think.” Leto is being tipped for an Oscar nomination for his role, which humanizes the homophobic traits of McConaughey’s character.
Marvel is famously short on female super heroes on the big screen, and with a plan that stretches years in the future, people wonder when they can correct that. “There’s obviously a drumbeat that is banging louder and louder that we want a female leader superhero. We have strong female characters in our films from Black Widow to Pepper Potts to Peggy Carter and you never know. Maybe there’s an offshoot film with one of them. Or Captain Marvel, you know?” Katee Sackhoff recently revealed that she’d had some discussions about playing Captain Marvel.
Just because Cyrus is kissing James on Scandal, don’t expect that the husbands are lovebirds again.
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett has hired a $400/hour lawyer to defend the state’s ban on marriage equality, and will pay the associates supporting him $325/hour. PA residents, your tax dollars at work.
Colby Keller reflects on being an introverted porn star, which may seem contradictory, but he’s really thought it through. I read this interview last week and couldn’t point to it because it was so NSFW, but the Huffington Post put up a safe version. I can honestly relate to this as an introvert who also feels the need to connect at times, and how sex and exhibitionism provide an outlet.
The Jonas Brothers sat down with Joan Rivers and the issue of Joe dumping Taylor Swift came up, as it always does, and the songs that were written about the breakup. They seem to have a sense of humor about the whole situation, even if they don’t have royalty checks.
Sony is sponsoring a contest for people to write the theme song for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, and Ricky Martin will be recording the song that the winner writes. One has to wonder if they’d be having an openly gay superstar record the theme song for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
“The Armpit Song” by Siwan Clark does a wonderful job of capturing the neverending chorus of activities that society expects women to perform to meet beauty standards, and drives the point home by having a man perform them throughout the song. I know I don’t feel the need to go through this, and it’s kind of sad that we shame women into doing it.
Trail Life USA is the new, anti-gay organization for Scouts who think the Boy Scouts are evil for allowing gay youth. They emphasize they’re not trashing the Boy Scouts, but getting back to the moral basics that they used to embody.
Coin is a walk down memory lane. Our protagonist loves his coin, but it gets stolen, and he has to fight his way through a parade of classic video games in order to get to the boss level and win back his precious coin. How many games do you recognize?
