The Muppets will be more adult, Pope Francis meets with gay French ambassador nominee, Robin Williams’ Boulevard gets theatrical release
Game of Thrones’ Michiel Huisman says he wasn’t even aware that he had been invited to pose for Playgirl. “They never reached me. Maybe my team was like, ‘No way’ [before they could ask me]. Listen, I’m very flattered by the attention that some of that has gotten but no, I’m not going to do that. Of course not.” His dismissal seems pretty sharp considering he’s already shown literally everything onscreen at this point.
We had mentioned that ABC was filming a pilot for a revival of The Muppet Show, and some details have come out. While it’s still a backstage setup like before, the show will delve more deeply into the personal lives of the cast, shot mockumentary style like The Office. “The Muppets return to prime time with a contemporary, documentary-style show that—for the first time ever—will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires; a more adult Muppet show, for kids of all ages.” It’s said to be more “grown up” than the previous version.
While France still has no official ambassador to Vatican City, Pope Francis did meet personally with the openly gay nominee, Laurent Stefanini. Both sides have confirmed the meeting, and simply say that discussions are ongoing.
Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso says that Iceman coming out made sense when he heard the story that writer Brian Bendis wrote for after the coming out. “It was our subsequent conversations about what the next story would be that really sold me. This is a character with decades of history, and one who we’ve seen falter on the romantic stage — more than once. So the seeds were always there.” He says that the call was made from the publishing side, and that it has no effect on the movie universe – unless they want it to. He’s also very positive about how this effects the character. “We look at this as being one shading of who he is. I think, personally that it is going to deepen the character, and humanize him even further, and make for fascinating stories. By that I am not saying you are not going to recognize Bobby Drake anymore. If you were a fan of Bobby Drake before, if you cared about him, I think this will draw you closer to the character, not push you away from him.” He also says that they’re not foolish enough to not deal with the fact that older Iceman is in theory, straight. But this isn’t a change that Marvel plans to retcon with Secret Wars. “This is who the character is now.”
As for why it all makes sense, you simply have to read the history of Bobby Drake’s love life. To a straight person, he’s unlucky in love. To a gay man, warning lights have been flashing for decades. I mean Rogue? She’s perfect for a closet case – he never has to have sex with her.
The Leahy Amendment to the human trafficking bill in Congress has failed. The Amendment would have specifically protected LGBT homeless youth, and was lobbied for by Cyndi Lauper among others. All Democrats voted for the bill, along with ten Republicans.
The Olsen twins say that they were taken off guard by the announcement of a Full House reunion. They plan on talking to their TV dad Bob Saget before deciding if they want to be a part of it. “We just found out about it today. I guess we’re going to talk to the creators and see what’s happening. “I’m shocked I haven’t heard from John [Stamos].”
Anti-gay Republican Virginia delegate Bob Marshall is sponsoring a Religious Freedom Restoration Bill, and he takes offense to his governor trying to grow the state’s economy by touting “open, inclusive and thriving business environment.” He says that’s offensive to straight people. “When you actually look at the rhetoric, that you need these laws to hire the best and the brightest, that kind of like is a sweeping statement that says that heterosexuals cannot be the best and the brightest.” He also says that gay people have all the rights we need. “My question is, what possible rights can a person who has this inclination have that you don’t have right now? I mean, homosexuals go to public schools, they can go to colleges, they vote, they drive cars, they have businesses, they go to country clubs. I don’t know what else is needed.”
Robin Williams’ final movie, Boulevard, in which he plays a taxi driver who picks up a male hustler only to see his life take a new trajectory has been picked up for theatrical release by Starz Digital, which is planning a release July 17 in NYC and other major markets.
Despite a statewide law that prevents local governments from enacting LGBT protections, Little Rock, Arkansas has done just that by a vote of 7-2. While the bill can’t protect workers in private employment, a loophole in the state law does allow it to protect city workers and contractors.
Ed Sheeran is under fire after he engaged in a rap battle with Devlin and busted out some pretty homophobic lyrics. “Yo, I freestyle to the faggoty man. I go on the bus and I sleep for a day, then I come back and they’re like, Ed, you look like this gay. These guys are safe, they’re not gay mans.” The singer’s management had the clip pulled from YouTube on a copyright claim after being approached for comment, and released a statement saying “Ed was sending up rappers who make homophobic remarks. He is clearly not homophobic.” I don’t know, if it quacks like a duck, raps like a duck. It’s probably a homophobic duck. I am immensely disappointed in this, I really thought he was one of the good guys.
The Nevada state Assembly has narrowly defeated a bill that would have forced transgender students to use the bathroom of their biological gender and required schools to provide separate facilities for transgender students. The dealine has now passed for bills to advance from their home chamber, so it’s effectively dead for this year’s session.
Sir Ian McKellen has made a surprise endorsement of the Labour Party’s platform on LGBT rights in advance of the nation’s election. “I am impressed by the aims and commitments of Labour’s manifesto for LGBT people, particularly the appointment of Michael Cashman as an international LGBT Rights Envoy. Such initiatives cost little, yet help make the world a better safer place for us all.”
Irish YouTube personality and radio DJ Riyadh Khalaf put together this powerful video in support of the marriage equality referendum that touched on the bullying he experienced as a youth, filmed in the locations of both joy and hate crimes. He talks to Buzzfeed about those experiences as well as his coming out to his mom, a devout Catholic, and his Iraqi Muslim father.
Dan Savage joined Chris Hayes to talk about the responses that Republican presidential candidates are giving about whether they’d attend a gay wedding. Basically it boils down to “Why would you invite them in the first place?” Why would you ask people that are actively opposing your right to marry to your actual wedding?
Broadway baby Joey Contreras’ new song “Ohio” is a tribute to all those Midwestern boys that make our hearts catch and our pants get a little tight. It’s a beautiful song, spare and full of joy and wonder, and the cute dancers certainly don’t hurt, especially in their use of football pants to honor the Buckeyes.
