Meme: Dolly Parton Loves Her Gay Fans, Neil Patrick Harris Turned Down “The Late Show,” Kim Kardashian Shows Social Conscience

Arkansas gives mixed rulings, Idaho denied a stay, National Organization for Marriage denied standing in Oregon

Dolly PartonDolly Parton is very aware of her LGBT fans. “The guys all want to look like me. I’ve always said it’s a good thing I was born a woman or I would have been a drag queen. I think they definitely relate to my flamboyance. I’ve always been so outgoing. But, I think more than anything, everybody realizes I’ve been through a lot myself. I’ve been persecuted for looking the way I looked in the early days, for saying what I think and feel. They know I understand what it’s like to be me, and to fight for being myself, and overcoming a lot of things. I think they also know that I just love them. I don’t judge or criticize anybody. God loves us all. I look for the God-light in everybody, and I want the God-light to shine through me. I understand them. We’re just people. We just do what we do, love who we love, and can’t help who we are. We should be that — proudly.”

The marriage equality case in Arkansas got very confusing yesterday. The State Supreme Court denied an emergency stay of the ruling, and denied an appeal (because the court order isn’t final and it has no jurisdiction yet), but also said that the lower court order failed to address a third law making it illegal for county clerks to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, so doing so was still illegal, putting existing marriages into doubt. Plaintiffs feel confident that they can file for the judge to Chozenaddress the third law in the final ruling.

FX has decided not to go forward with a second season of their animated comedy Chozen. I never really enjoyed Chozen, personally, but do feel it was an important show trying to say something new.

While tensions have been rising between Russia and the United States for some time, the International Space Station had remained above it all. Now, via tweet, the Russians have stated that they will not be supporting the program beyond their 2020 commitment, and not that the Russian part of the ISS can operate independently of the other modules, while the U.S. portion will not.

The Centers for Disease Control have expanded their guidance on the use of PrEP to prevent HIV beyond men who have sex with men, now recommending it to anyone at risk of HIV.Lea Michele Naya Rivera

Ryan Murphy says he has no idea where the idea of a feud between Naya Rivera and Lea Michele came from. “I always marvel at the things that become headline news that most of the time are completely fabricated. I don’t think there is a story between Naya and Lea. Naya’s coming back next year, Lea’s coming back next year – anybody ever in that cast has an open invitation to come back and finish the character they so beautifully started.”

In Idaho, Judge Candy Dale has denied Governor Butch Otter’s request for a stay of her order enjoining the state from enforcing their ban on marriage equality. Unless the 9th Circuit issues a stay, marriages can begin 9AM Friday.Neil Patrick Harris

SundanceTV is developing a series based on the Hap and Leonard crime novels, which pair a straight white southern man with a gay African American veteran solving crimes. As the veteran, Leonard is fee to use guns and violence and prone to anger when solving crimes, while hap is averse to violence.

Neil Patrick Harris tells Howard Stern that he took meetings about taking over The Late Show. “[Moonves and CBS entertainment chairman Nina Tassler] called me in and sat me down and asked if [Late Show] was something I’d be interested in doing. In that instance, I felt like I knew what my skillsets were and I kind of knew what it is that I wanted to do after [How I Met Your Mother] … so I was surprised he pitched me that idea. I think I would get bored of the repetition fast, and the structure of it is so set. I don’t have any interest in doing monologue, commercial, sketch, guest, guest, guest, musical act, good night.” Neil does say that he likes the idea of doing a weekly variety show, and Moonves is open to it.Michael Sam

OWN is going to be producing a docu-series about Michael Sam. Oprah says “We are honored that Michael is trusting us with his private journey in this moment that has not only made history but will shape it forever. I am proud of the focus on authentic storytelling in our new documentary series format. The next real-life story we follow in The Untitled Michael Sam Project promises to spark valuable, important discussion on life in America today. Acceptance and illumination start here.”

In Oregon, Judge Michael McShane has ruled that the National Organization for Marriage has no standing to defend the state’s ban on marriage equality.

It’s not often that I praise Kim Kardashian, but she pulled her bridal shower from the Beverly Hills Hotel in protest of the Sultan of Brunei’s imposition of Sharia Law in his nation that would allow the stoning of homosexuals.

Republican lobJim Parsonsbyist Jack Burkman says that he has launched his boycott of the St. Louis Rams and Visa over Michael Sam. “Visa and the Rams will learn that when you trample the Christian community and Christian values, there will be a terrible financial price to pay. Openly gay football players send a terrible message to our youth about morality. Somebody needs to step up because the moral fiber of the nation is eroding.” Good luck boycotting Visa. After all, they’re “everywhere you want to be.” Right now in fact it seems a lot of them are being used to make Michael Sam’s jersey the second rated seller among rookies.

When Jim Parsons’ agent sent him to read for The Big Bang Theory, he didn’t know why everyone was so excited about a show from Chuck Woolery. Of course the show was from Chuck Lorre, who created the then biggest comedy on television, Two and a Half Men.

The second edition of Slate’s Ask a Homo is out, and Bryan Lowder talks about the gay lisp. Well, he kind of talks around it. Ideas about where it comes from, genetic or environment. That it crosses economic and social boundaries. That his own lisp was removed with speech therapy as a child. I’m not sure where he intended to go with this, but it probably won’t piss everyone off nearly as much as the “stay out of gay bars” first episode.

Bill Weir has always been a favorite anchor of mine, and he artfully put the Michael Sam kiss into context among some huge television moments, like the first interracial kiss on television on Star Trek, or All In the Family’s groundbreaking gay character. But he notes this is different – natural, emotional, unscripted by liberal Hollywood writers or manipulative reality show producers, making it another watershed moment in television.

Speaking of, do any of my European readers know if anyone over there is losing their shit over this rather deep kiss between Ivan Rakitic and Daniel Carrico at the Europa League finals? Or is it just us in the U.S. that can’t seem to handle two men kissing on a sporting channel?

Opinionated. You'll love to hate me
