Tony Perkins calls Donald Trump breath of fresh air, Boy Scouts prepare to end ban on gay adults, Legend of Zelda theme gets all too real lyrics

Because Republicans are horrible people, Donald Trump has climbed even higher in the latest poll, with 21% of the vote were the election held today. His closest opponent is Jeb Bush with 14%, followed by Scott Walker at 12%. Five of the sixteen clowns in the car are polling at less that 1%

BBC Culture has asked 62 international film critics what the best American films in history were, and the list doesn't line up with the Oscars at all, and is wildly different from any list you've seen before. Gone with the Wind barely made the list at 97. Only 12 Best Picture winners made the list, and a whopping 60 of them weren't even nominated for Best Picture. Could it be that The Academy is so far up its own ass that it honors the wrong films?

Tony Perkins thinks that Donald Trump is a breath of fresh air. “The conservatives in this country are so fed up with politics as usual among Republicans…that they’re just looking for someone to talk straight to them, even if they don’t agree with them. I mean given all of his bluster he is still a breath of fresh air among many conservatives in this country.” Honestly, it's more like a breath of someone who has been eating sardines and Limburger cheese with onions.

Meanwhile his buddy Brian Brown is freaking out over the Equality Act. "It would allow gay and lesbian activists to persecute Americans in virtually every area of society — in employment, public accommodations, housing, credit, and a dozen other areas of civil life. Wherever federal law prohibits racial discrimination, it would also prohibit 'discrimination' based on 'sexual orientation and gender identity.' The legislation puts in the crosshairs anyone who believes God created people male and female. It would declare that a traditional view of human sexuality is hateful and bigoted and treat Christians, Jews and other people of faith just as the law treats racists. HR 3185 specifically denies someone who has been targeted the ability to rely on the provisions of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act as a defense against the complaint of discrimination."

That last bit about the RFRA might be why no Republicans have signed on to cosponsor the act. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the first sitting Republican to support marriage equality, isn't sure. “While the Equality Act seeks to be an important step forward to protect LGBT individuals against discrimination in housing, workplaces, schools, and public accommodations, I have concerns about the current proposal’s broadness and how it will impact religious organizations. I remain committed to working to ensure all Americans are treated fairly.” Here's the thing: the Equality Act is bold because it's basically just amending the Civil Rights act to cover sexual orientation, sex, and gender identity. It's basically impossible to oppose it on the basis of what it does, because it calls into question the Civil Rights Act, and that's political poison. So honing in on RFRA is a way to oppose it, even though using RFRA as an excuse to discriminate on the basis of race would never be supported. And we need to call that out.

Today the Boy Scouts of America are expected to vote to end the ban on adult volunteers in Scouting, as well as paid positions. Facing lawsuits and the drying up of corporate money, they have little choice. But before we celebrate, the change will allow local councils to keep their ban, and under the old discriminatory policy, as forward thinking groups dropped Scouts for discrimination, nearly 70% of local troops are sponsored by churches, and are likely to keep their bans. Oddly, locally, this could still work out in my own favor. Betchel Reserve, the multi-thousand acre permanent camp designed to host their Jamborees, is about 15 miles from my house. In off years, it allows the public to use the facility and employees dozens of people, who can now be openly gay. It also means I can go use their trails, zip lines, and climbing facilities without guilt.
