A Memphis man is in jail after admitting he stabbed a woman because he believed her to be a lesbian, CBS affiliate WREG reports.

The victim tells police that Gaylord McDowell walked up to her in “attack mode” the morning of February 28 while she was waiting for a bus at a MATA bus stop. During the ensuing argument, McDowell allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed her in the breast.

A MATA bus driver reported the incident to police, but the 39-year-old suspect had fled the scene by the time they arrived. The injured victim was taken to the hospital where she received 10 stitches.

The driver, who says he has had several previous issues with McDowell, spotted the suspect again earlier this week.

When arrested, McDowell was heard saying, “I already know what the police got me for, for that girl.” After officers found a pocket knife on him, he said, "That's the same knife I had the other day."

Although McDowell did not know his victim, he later told officers that she is gay and that he “does not like gay people.”

McDowell was charged with attempted second-degree murder.
