Miami drag queen Elaine Lancaster became a legitimate hero this week — or “shero,” depending on who you ask — when she threw herself in harm’s way to pull a man from a burning car, moments before it was engulfed in flames.

Lancaster, aka James Davis, recounted the harrowing tale to the Miami Herald.

She told the paper she’s been living in Mykonos preparing to work a month-long gig at @54 in Mykonos alongside New York queens Roxy Brooks and the legendary Lady Bunny. She watched the car drama unfold from her kitchen window at about 1:15am one morning before snapping into action.

Inside the car were two men and one woman visiting from Italy.

“I could smell they were burning the clutch,” said Davis. “I said to the guy, ‘The car is on fire — I smell it.’ The girl says, that’s OK, OK. I said, ‘No, I see flames.’”

He continued:

“The guy in the back seat opens the door and gets out of the car. The guy on the passenger side, he sees fire coming out of the hood. It’s almost like he hypnotized. He’s frozen. He keeps staring at the hood.

I ran up the stairs and hopped over a little wall to get to the passengers side. The window as halfway down. I reached in and pushed his seat belt button. I opened the car door and grabbed him by the arm. He stood up in a daze. Some people handle stress differently. He snapped out of it in the house and said, ‘You saved my life.’

[By 1:44am] the car was completely engulfed in flames.”

Unfortunately, Davis’ heroic act was performed in street clothes. “I had on a pair of shorts, no shirt, no shoes. I was dressed as a boy,” he said.

A very courageous boy, at that!
