Miami Winter Party Attendee Dies From Coronavirus

Israel Carreras was 40.

It was announced March 15 that a 2020 Winter Party Festival attendee had tested positive for COVID-19. More partygoers later tested positive, and one attendee has now died.

Miami resident Israel Carreras, 40, was identified Friday as the first coronavirus-related death in Miami-Dade County, WSVN reports. He had no prior health issues or complications, according to family members.

Friends say Carreras, who worked in a warehouse and as an Uber driver, contracted the virus during Miami's annual gay circuit event, which is organized by the National LGBTQ Task Force.

The victim’s partner, Franco Conquista, said Carreras initially isolated at home but was later taken to the hospital, where he was put on a respirator and placed in a medically induced coma.

“He started to feel sick after the event,” Conquista said. “We went together. I went to his place, taking care of him for two days, and I also had it. He couldn’t breathe, so he wanted to go to the hospital, and then, he was at the hospital for four or five days. Then, they put him to sleep because he was really agitated, and then, he never woke up again.”

"It doesn’t just kill old people," added Conquista, who is self-isolating at home with the virus. "It can kill anybody, so just stay home and think of other people. Try to save other people’s lives. Just because you are not affected directly doesn’t mean that people are not suffering from this."

Amid cancellations or postponements of major events like SXSW and Coachella, this year’s Winter Party went on as scheduled March 4–10. An estimated 5,500 people attended the weeklong festival.

Educational posters about COVID-19 prevention were reportedly placed throughout the venue, and 10,000 hand sanitizers were handed out to the crowd.
