Meet the Young Star of the “Love, Simon” Spin-Off TV Series

Nick Robinson will return to produce and narrate the Disney+ show.

Iced coffees for everybody! The upcoming television adaptation of Love, Simon has found its lovable lead.

Michael Cimino will star in the new half-hour Disney+ series, set in the same world as the 2018 coming-of-age movie, as Victor, “a new student at Creekwood High School on his own journey of self-discovery, facing challenges at home, adjusting to a new city, and struggling with his sexual orientation,” TVLine reports. "When it all seems too much, he reaches out to Simon to help him navigate the ups and downs of high school."

Nick Robinson, who starred as gay teen Simon Spier in the groundbreaking film, will return to produce and narrate the series.

Cimino's previous credits include Annabelle Comes Home and the CBS series Training Day. His Instagram posts indicate that he is dating 19-year-old filmmaker Maria Valentina Gomez.

It was reported in April that a Love, Simon adaptation was in the works for Disney+, Disney's forthcoming streaming service.

As previously reported, Ugly Betty's Ana Ortiz will play "Victor’s smart and warm mother who loves her husband and her family, but is under a lot of pressure as they move their family across the country."

According to Variety, the cast will also include "James Martinez as Armando, Victor’s regular blue collar 'guy’s guy' father who loves his family deeply and works hard for his family; Isabella Ferreira as Pilar, Victor’s sullen younger sister in the throws of teenage angst; Mateo Fernandez will make his acting debut as Adrian, Victor’s adorable, good-natured little brother; Johnny Sequoyah as Mia, Victor’s whip-smart friend with a quick wit and easy laugh; Bebe Wood as Lake, Mia’s quirky and social media-obsessed best friend; George Sear as Benji, Victor’s confident and charming classmate; Anthony Turpel as Felix, Victor’s lanky, awkward new neighbor; and Mason Gooding as Andrew, Creekwood’s cocky and popular basketball-loving jock."

This Is Us showrunners Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker, who wrote the Love, Simon screenplay based on a YA novel by author Becky Albertalli, will be showrunners and executive producers on the Love, Simon series. Greg Berlanti, who directed the film, is unlikely to be involved due to his exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Television.

“We could not be more excited to be making Love, Simon for Disney+,” said Berger and Aptaker in a statement. “Writing Love, Simon was one of the most profound and enjoyable experiences of our careers to date and we are beyond thrilled that we get to revisit this world and tell the story of Victor, a brand new Creekwood student, and his family and friends. We have a phenomenal group of writers with tremendously personal connections to the material crafting our episodes, and have assembled a dream team cast and crew to bring these stories to life, and cannot wait to share what we’re working on with the world.”

Love, Simon is a powerful story embraced by critics and audiences alike for its universal messages of authenticity, love, and acceptance,” said Agnes Chu, senior vice president of content for Disney+. “We are honored to partner with the talented team at 20th Century Fox Television to bring this new chapter of a beloved story to Disney+, continuing the personal and uplifting narrative that captivated fans of the original film.”

The Love, Simon series is set to begin production this month in Los Angeles. Lesbian TV veteran Amy York Rubin will direct the pilot.

Love, Simon made Hollywood history last year as the first major studio film to star a gay teen protagonist.

The feel-good rom-com also won Outstanding Film – Wide Release at the 2019 GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles.

Disney+ is set to launch November 12 in the U.S.
