Michael Jordan Finally Speaks Out Against HB2—But Is It Too Little, Too Late?

"We have always sought to provide an inclusive environment."

Basketball legend Michael Jordan has spoken out against North Carolina's anti-LGBT House Bill 2 in a statement to the press.

The notoriously nonpolitical Jordan, who now owns the Charlotte Hornets, opened up to the Charlotte Observer about his opinions on HB 2, the new North Carolina law that prohibits trans individuals from using public restrooms that align with their gender identities and prohibits local governments from installing protective anti-discrimination ordinances.

“As my organization has stated previously, the Charlotte Hornets and Hornets Sports & Entertainment are opposed to discrimination in any form, and we have always sought to provide an inclusive environment,” Jordan began.

“As has been the case since the building opened, we will continue to ensure that all fans, players and employees feel welcome while at work or attending NBA games and events at Time Warner Cable Arena.”

For some, the statement read as weak and non-specific, while others praised the icon for taking a stand at all, something he rarely, if ever, did while he was active in the NBA.

While it's not clear what motivated Jordan to speak out now, a few observers have suggested that if the NBA does in fact pull their 2017 All-Star Game from Charlotte in protest of the legislation, it would be in Jordan's best interest to distance himself from the law to protect his business' commercial interests.

Regardless, Jordan's words hold weight and better for them to be used to express disdain for the bill than to not be used at all. The famous athlete now joins a growing list of celebrities (including Bruce Springsteen, Nick Jonas, Demi Lovato, Cyndi Lauper and Ringo Starr, to name just a few) who have spoken out against HB 2.
