Michael Sam Gets Visa Ad, Drag Queen Conchita Wurst Makes It To Eurovision Finals: Today In Gay

Michael Sam still hasn't been signed to an NFL team, but that hasn't stopped him from signing a sweet endorsement deal with Visa. The out footballer—who will become the NFL's first openly gay player if he's signed during the NFL draft this week—appears in a promo for the credit-card company, in which he urges the viewer to judge him for his play on the field, not off of it.

"We felt that Michael's story was a perfect fit for our 'everywhere' campaign, which is meant to inspire people to reach their own personal goals and aspirations," says Visa's chief marketing officer Kevin Burke. "We wish Michael the best on and off the field as he embarks on the next chapter of his life."

It's rare for an athlete to get an endorsement before they've been signed—or for a late-round pick, as Sam is likely to be, but the former Missouri defensive end has already received dozens of endorsement offers. Watch his Visa commercial below.

Austrian drag performer Conchita Wurst has advanced into the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest with her song "Rise Like a Phoenix."

Wurst has been the subject of attacks recently, including by Russian politician Vitaly Milonov—author of the country's gay "propaganda" ban—who called her a "pervert."

“I can only say ‘Thank you for your attention!’” Wurst told the AP about the haters. “If this is only about me and my person, I can live with it. I'm just a singer in a fabulous dress, with great hair and a beard."

The Grammys of cheesy pop music, Eurovision is being held this year in Copenhagen. Other finalists who will battle it out at Saturday's grand finale include France's Twin Twin, Greece's Freaky Fortune feat. RiskyKidd and Iceland's Pollapönk, whose song, "No Prejudice," tackles discrimination with a lighthearted approach. Watch "Rise Like a Phoenix," below.

The lounge has been a mainstay of the Beverly Hills Hotel for more than 70 years—and was just rated one of Hollywood's hottest power-lunch spots in January, but since the Sultan has instituted stoning as a punishment for homosexuals, it's become a ghost town, with everyone from Ellen DeGeneres and Jay Leno to JJ Abrams boycotting and canceling events.

THR scoped out the scene at lunchtime:

From the scene inside the hotel's circular lobby, one might not get the immediate sense that anything was wrong, as bright-eyed desk clerks described amenities to a smattering of arriving guests while a number of well-heeled patrons lounged nearby.

But upon entering the Polo Lounge, located to the far right of the lobby, it became instantly clear that something was amiss. The mossy green front room, including the mighty Booth 1 – a coveted piece of U-shaped real estate where Viacom chief Sumner Redstone has broken bread countless times with Tom Cruise – sat entirely empty.

In the middle of the lunch rush, a lonely pianist, tinkling out the likes of Coldplay’s “Spiderwebs” and “Nadia’s Theme” from The Young & the Restless, was accompanied only by wandering white-suited waiters with too little to do.
