Michael Sam Signs Deal For Docu-Series On Oprah Winfrey Network

Michael Sam is certainly riding the wave of his fame: The newly drafted Ram already has an endorsement deal with Visa and has just negotiated to be the subject of a documentary series on OWN, Oprah Winfrey's cable network.

The untitled show will spotlight the former Missouri defensive end during his “historic journey as he prepares to enter the biggest professional sports league in America,” according to a press release.

Cameras will follow Sam as he works to earn a place on the Rams's active roster and handle the glare of the media spotlight that comes with being the first openly gay player in the NFL.

“We are honored that Michael is trusting us with his private journey in this moment that has not only made history but will shape it forever,” said Oprah Winfrey, who previously aired Lindsay Lohan's train-wreck of a docuseries. “[The series] promises to spark valuable, important discussion on life in America today. Acceptance and illumination start here.”

Sam hopes the project would help other people in similar situations: “Like every player out there working to make a team right now, my focus is on playing football to the very best of my ability,” he says. “I am determined—and if seeing my story helps somebody else accept who they are and to go for their dreams too, that’s great."

Sam is already under a ton of pressure—is adding to the media circus sure to follow him best way to go?  And how can your focus be wholly on football when producers and cameramen are shouting in your ear.

Tread carefully, Michael.
