Michael Urie And Mercedes Ruehl Starring In Revival Of Harvey Fierstein's "Torch Song Trilogy"

Fierstein has given the script a new edit—and a new title.

Michael Urie and Mercedes Ruehl are starring in a revival of Harvey Fierstein’s groundbreaking queer drama Torch Song Trilogy, coming to off-Broadway's Tony Kiser Theater under the direction of Moisés Kaufman (The Laramie Project, Gross Indecency)

Mounted by Second Stage, it will be newly edited version of the Tony-winning play, titled simply Torch Song.

"Theater is a living, breathing entity and so are audiences. Even the most faithful stage recreations are tinted by the moment in which they are experienced," says Fierstein of his decision to update the text.

He debuted the deeply personal work as three one-acts nearly 40 years ago, playing Arnold Beckoff, a drag performer with a closeted lover and an overbearing mother. After moving to Broadway in 1982, Torch Song Trilogy earned two Tonys (for Best Play and Best Actor) and was adapted into a 1988 film.

Urie will star as Arnold in the revival, with Ruehl playing Mrs. Beckoff, the role originated by Estelle Getty and played by Anne Bancroft in the film version. Other casting announcements are still to come.

Second Stage artistic director Carole Rothman says she was in awe of the play when she first saw it in 1982. “While I knew I was watching something extremely special, I had no idea how groundbreaking this play would become for generations of theatergoers and, ultimately, for Broadway."

Torch Song will begin previews in September at the Tony Kiser Theater.
