Mimi Imfurst Salutes Drag Superstar Divine With New Play, "Divine/Intervention"

Divine was the original superstar drag queen, with a career that spanned film, music and stage before her death in 1988.

Now, RuPaul's Drag Race all-star Mimi Imfurst is praising John Waters' muse—born Glenn Milstead—by directing Divine/Intervention, a new play at Philadelphia's Voyeur club through August 2.

"Divine is an icon," says Mimi, who cites the Polyester star as an inspiration. "[She] paved the way for so many other drag acts to come after her. She didn’t just break down doors, she blew entire houses in!"

Set on the night before Divine's death, the plays features two actors playing the opposite sides of her persona: Ryan Walter as Glenn and Bobby Goodrich as Divine.

The purpose of the Divine Show, conceived by Mimi and written by playwright E. Dale Smith, is "to tell her story in a new way, with an credible amount of honesty."

So, what did the Season Three queen think about this year's Divine-themed challenge?

"Anything involving Divine excites me," she declares. "It's pretty awesome that Drag Race could introduce Divine to a whole new generation of drag fans!"

She admits she would have loved to performed a John Waters scene on Drag Race, but insists "Divine/Intervention is [our] version of the challenge."

The play—coming to New York starting August 16 as part of the upcoming Fringe Festival—has already garnering high praise, with the Philadelphia Inquirer calling it, “a serious and often moving bio drama about the counter-culture icon.”
