Man Begs Voters To Choose His Husband As Minnesota Mayor In Charming Political Ad

“I happen to be gay, but I’m not running to be the gay mayor," says Tom Hoch.

Minneapolis mayoral candidate Tom Hoch released a unique campaign ad this week that features him at home with his husband.

The spot is a reimagining of a common political trope in which a candidate's wife humorously acts like she can't wait to get her husband out of the house because he can't stop talking about improving the city. Except in Hoch's ad, the relationship is between two men.

The spot does a great job of not making a big deal out of the same-sex relationship, and Hoch says it's not even necessarily aimed at gay voters.

“I happen to be gay, but I’m not running to be the gay mayor,” Hoch told CBS Minnesota. “I want people to know who I am.”

“It’s also an example of how normal we all are,” he added. “We’re married. Happens to be two men, but it really isn’t substantially different than it is for any married couple.”

Whether Hoch gets elected or not, things are looking good for Minneapolis' LGBT community. The city recently received a perfect score on LGBT rights from the Human Rights Campaign.
