Lawmakers in the Minnesota House of Representatives passed a marriage-equality bill this afternoon by a margin of 75 to 59. The measure now heads to the State Senate for a vote and could become law by Monday.

Governor Mark Dayton has already promised to sign the bill into law, so if it passes Minnesota will become the 12th state in the nation to recognize same-sex nuptials. Wedding could begin as early as August.

The victory has been hard earned: Just last fall, voters were asked to weigh in on a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. The measure failed soundly, and LGBT advocates were aided by  a Democratic takeover of the Legislature.

Rep. Andrew Falk (D-Murdock) was previously noncommittal about the issue, but notified constituents on Wednesday that he supported the right of gay Minnesotans to marry, just like he did last summer. “How do I, in good conscience, not support that same right for all Minnesotans? A right that most of us take for granted," said Falk. "Marriage is about love. Marriage is about commitment,” Falk wrote. “Marriage is about equality. Marriage is about finding the person that you cannot live without.”
