Grab your Lisa Frank trapper keeper because binders are back.
Mitt Romney and Barack Obama squared off tonight for their second presidential debate. Pay equity for women came up and after President Obama brought up being raised by a single mother and the Lily Ledbetter bill, it was Governor Romney’s turn:
“I had the chance to pull together a cabinet and all the applicants seemed to be men [...] And I said, ‘Well, gosh, can’t we — can’t we find some — some women that are also qualified?’”
They must be out there somewhere. If we search hard enough.
“And so we — we took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet. I went to a number of women’s groups and said, ‘Can you help us find folks,’ and they brought us whole binders full of women.”
!!! WHOLE BINDERS FULL? Geez, Romney, that was a very valiant and brave effort, putting yourself out there and trying so damn hard to find qualified women.
Romney then went on to cite a study that said his administration had the most high-ranking women of all 50 states. “Now one of the reasons I was able to get so many good women to be part of that team was because of our recruiting effort.” Us men should get all of the credit for these high-ranking women. We did it!
Let’s not even get into the fact that this entire story is being called into question. Instead, we’d like to point out that Romney is 2 for 2 on winning Internet memes. First Big Bird, now binders. It’s like we’re in elementary school all over again!
Once this gets old, we can casually move over to the Mormon jokes about curating lists of women. But we’ll leave that for later.
