Mittens The Hermaphrodite Cat Undergoing Gender-Assignment Surgery

A hermaphrodite cat named Mittens will get a new lease on life this year, thanks to the Newfoundland family raising money for the kitty's gender assignment surgery.

Owner Colleen Clarke-Murphy told CBC News she was shocked to learn Mittens, the cat who instantly became part of her family after following her daughter home in October, had both male and female genetalia.

Though the family wasn't aware of Mittens' unique condition until a recent visit to the vet, Clarke-Murphy says Mittens will be treated no differently at home. "I think it's got both personalities, so it really don't matter," she said.

Though she had hoped Mittens would someday identify as female, Clarke-Murphy says Mittens will be assigned male parts — per the vet's recommendation — in order to fix the bowel and urination issues that stem from his condition.

The bill for Mittens' procedure will be about $1,500, which the family is planning to pay with the profits from a Facebook auction of used items.

Wishing you a speedy recovery and good health, Mittens!
