“Modern Family” Finale Deals with Loss, “The Goodwin Games” Disappoints Disappoints

Plus, Disney pulls a gluten joke and does Elementary modernize a literary hero right?

Stephen Moffat commented that the next season of Doctor Who has already been plotted, since the show has to work far in advance.

Doctor Who

I don’t know how to react to Jezebel’s praise for Amy Schumer and Schumer’s new sketch comedy show. She’s an incredibly witty comic, but it feels like every time I start really enjoying her work she says something that crosses the line. Still, so far Inside Amy Schumer has been a pretty funny show.

Rumer Willis has booked a role on Pretty Little Liars, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Willis will play a charity organizer who appears in one episode but could return for more.

io9 praises Elementary declaring it, “The right way to update a classic hero.” If you’re looking for an attempt to declare Elementary superior to the British Sherlock, it doesn’t go there. It just examines what the CBS modern Sherlock Holmes drama does well and poorly (pretty much all of those failings have to do with being on the same channel as NCIS and CSI). At this point, it should be clear, they’re different shows attempting different things with the literary Sherlock.

Elementary, "Dead Man's Switch"

Discovery has ordered a reality series about a family-owned oil company struggling to survive with major oil companies competing. In desperation, they look to drilling on their own land, a move I hope wasn’t inspired by watching the new Dallas.

After getting pushback from viewers, The Disney Channel has pulled an episode of Jessie that made fun of a character’s gluten intolerance in a way that a change.org petition characterized as bullying.

Bates Motel, "Midnight"

In ratings news, Motive got a slow start while The Goodwin Games’ debut was pretty disappointing.

Meanwhile, the ratings for Bates Motel have been fairly steady all season and got a modest bump for its finale.

Okay. I guess Nick’s opinion of gay men is going to change because Will saved his life? First, Will is going to have to survive his heroics. Good thing Sonny is too distracted by a pregnant woman screaming and giving birth to notice.

Tonight’s fourth season finale doesn’t have Brad but it does have Marion Ross as the Vice-Principal at Brick’s school and French Stewart as the Principal.

Modern Family (ABC) 9:00 PM ET
You know how the Pritchett clan seems to handle everything together? For the season finale, they’re going to Florida together to help Phil pack things up after his mother’s death. I have to admit, they’re going to have to work to convince me the entire extended family would take such a trip. Still, cheers to Modern Family for tackling the funeral episode.

Modern Family, "Goodnight Gracie"

Okay, I actually enjoyed Ryan and Luis’ rivalry last week, at least when it involved one shady guy getting his due. The just desserts might go the other way this week as Luis gets caught using deceptive pictures in a listing.

Nashville (ABC) 10:00 PM ET
Okay, I meant to give this show a chance after Will (Chris Carmack) kissed Gunnar but May isn’t a good time for me to put new shows on my ’to watch’ list. Now that the season’s ending, should I be catching up on the character? Since Gunnar’s working to win over Scarlett, I guess Will’s kiss wasn’t returned.

The singers get their big Mall of America gig for the season finale, but with the way things have been going it looks like this could be their final performance.

Stephen Fry is on tonight’s show. As awesome as that is, it would have been so much better if the discussion could have included, “Tell us about your new show, Super Clyde.”

Finally! A reality show on AMC that I’m excited to see. That’s mostly because Alec Mapa is involved so I guess I could have just as easily said, “Finally! Someone’s giving Alec Mapa a show!”

Lyle Masaki is a fan of obscure superheroes, video games, adorkable guys and that show you loved that got cancelled way too soon.
