"Mommie Dearest" Musical Scrubs Its Way Closer To Broadway

What rhymes with "wire hangers?"

Soon Christina Crawford might be able to find "the booze and the boys" on Broadway.

Out of the Box Theatrics recently hosted a reading of a new musical based on Crawford's memoir, Mommie Dearest, the inspiration for the 1981 cult classic.

The musical's book was written by Crawford, music by David Nehls (The Great American Trailer Park Musical) with lyrics written by both Crawford and Nehls.

“The focal point of the Mommie Dearest the musical is the mystery meaning of language in a will, disinheriting the two eldest adopted children of a famous Hollywood movie star and made public after her death," wrote Out of the Box about the staged reading.

"Told primarily from the coming-of-age point of view of a brother-sister pair as they grow up, struggle with adversity and try to remain family even as they are forced down different paths, the musical explores three decades of American culture.Their story is a triumph of the human spirit when set against unrepentant cruelty.”

The musical's preview starred Broadway newcomer Alison Lea Bender, Jeremy Benton (Cagney, 42nd Street), Peter Cormican (The Phantom of the Opera, Follies), Hannah Rose DeFlumeri (Bullets Over Broadway), Madeleine Doherty (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Producers) and Tari Kelly (Groundhog Day).

It seems like every other movie is headed to Broadway, why not a gay cult classic? The songs pretty much write themselves with legendary quotes like "Bring me the axe," "Don't f*ck with me, fellas," "No wire hangers, ever" each inspiring a number.

A reading of a musical doesn't mean that it will end up on Broadway (did you see NBC's Smash?) or even Off-Broadway, but it's good to know that finally after all of these years an over-the-top movie like Mommie Dearest is finally a musical.

We think Jessica Lange should reprise her Joan Crawford if the musical heads to the Great White Way.
