Monica Lewinsky Finally Joins Twitter: "I Was Patient Zero For Cyberbullying"

The scandal before there was Scandal, Monica Lewinsky joined Twitter today to take on cyberbullying, inspired she said, by the late Tyler Clementi, who committed suicide after he learned his roommate secretly filmed and broadcasted his sexual encounter with another man.

In her Twitter bio, Lewinsky describes herself as "social activist. public speaker. contributor to Vanity Fair. knitter of things without sleeves." She sent out her first two tweets earlier this morning:

The second tweet refers to her first ever public address since 2001 at Forbes' inaugural 30 Under 30 summit for overachieving millennials held in Philadelphia. In her speech, the 41-year-old Lewinsky talked about how she was the first person to experience cyberbullying on a national level and that it was her "mission" to end it.

“I was Patient Zero. The first person to have their reputation completely destroyed worldwide via the Internet. There was no Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram back then. But there were gossip, news and entertainment websites replete with comment sections and emails which could be forwarded. Of course, it was all done on the excruciatingly slow dial up. Yet around the world this story went. A viral phenomenon that, you could argue, was the first moment of truly 'social media.'"

She decided to get back into the public spotlight after meeting Clementi's parents:

That tragedy is one of the principal reasons I am standing up here today. While it touched us both, my mother was unusually upset by the story, and I wondered why. Eventually it dawned on me: she was back in 1998, back to a time when I was periodically suicidal; when she might very easily have lost me; when I, too, might have been humiliated to death.

Which is why Lewinksy is jumping back into the fray with her Twitter account. With her Twitter verification and two tweets, she has already rocketed past 22,000 followers (undoubtedly more by the time you read this) since she joined. As of yet, she hasn't followed anybody else, so don't expect any #followforfollows.
