"Moonlight" Had A Historic Weekend At The Box Office

Will it conquer the Oscars next?

Moonlight, the film being called the "the best movie of the year" opened in limited release this past weekend in New York and L.A. The A24 release racked up a $414,740 opening weekend in just four theaters, which works out to a $103,675 per-location-average—the biggest per-theater-average of 2016.

If those numbers don't mean much to you look at it this way: the number one film of the weekend, Tyler Perry's Boo! A Madea Halloween made $27.6 million nationwide, but only $12,212 per screen.

Moonlight joins a short list of 25 other films to have a per-location-average of over $100,000—ten of those being animated feature films like The Lion King.

The Barry Jenkins film also didn't have the luxury of being able to rely on the support of a high-profile cast or producers like other movies on the list such as Brokeback Mountain, Precious and Birdman.

Could this box office green lead to awards gold? Only time will tell when awards season starts gearing up in the coming weeks.

Moonlight will have a nationwide release on November 4.
