"Moonlight", "La La Land," Win At 2016 Critics' Choice Awards
The 22nd Annual Critics' Choice Awards took place more than a month earlier than last year, giving Moonlight a boost while the film is still in theaters.
Barry Jenkins' breakout film, about a young black gay man's struggle to survive in crime-ridden Miami, took home awards for Best Acting Ensemble and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali.
Ali played sympathetic drug dealer and surrogate father Juan, and said he was sad not every actor would have the chance to work with Moonlight director Barry Jenkins.
"I wish that for all of you.”
The actor, who also appeared in House of Cards and Marvel’s Luke Cage, is an odds-on favorite for an Oscar nomination.
He also accepted the award for Best Acting Ensemble, with castmates Janelle Monáe, Naomie Harris, Ashton Sanders, and Alex Hibbert standing behind him.
Moonlight earned 10 nominations all together, tying with Arrival and coming just behind La La Land, which won eight awards last night, including Best Picture, Best Song and Best Director for Damien Chazelle.
Chazelle thanked his producers for enduring "six years of what seemed like an impossible dream, an uphill climb, and you guys never lost faith."
