"Moonlight," "Shadowhunters," "Black Mirror," Win Big At GLAAD Media Awards

The GLAAD Media Awards air Thursday at 10/9c on Logo.

The GLAAD Media Awards honored inclusive films, television shows, music, journalism and more on Saturday night in Los Angeles. Big winners at the annual awards show included Moonlight, which won outstanding film in the wide release category. (And there was no mixup with the envelopes.)

Writer Tarell Alvin McCraney, who accepted the honor, challenged the media to keep shining a spotlight on underrepresented groups.

“We win when we give our children, the ones who are going missing in the night, or wondering how much they matter to us, to each other, to the law... give them the courage, the tools and resources to scatter their light across the cinema walls and make the face of heaven so fine. We won for Moonlight today, but how are we winning tomorrow?”

On the television side, Transparent won outstanding comedy, while Freeform's fantasy series Shadowhunters took the drama category. Other small-screen winners include Black Mirror, USA's Eyewitness and CBS' daytime drama The Bold and the Beautiful, which added a trans character, Maya Forrester (Karla Mosley ) in recent years.

"I play an openly proud bisexual warlock and a person of color that’s in a relationship with a recently out gay shadowhunter who hunts demons for a living. I don’t think that this combination has ever existed on TV,” said Shadowhunters Harry Shum Jr., who accepted the award with co-star Matthew Daddario.

Patricia Arquette, the recipient of this year's Vanguard award, tearfully dedicated it to her transgender sister, Alexis Arquette, who passed away last year.
