I am personally heading out to Palm Springs this weekend, and in the spirit of fairness, I wanted everyone stuck in colder climes to know it’s about to get easier to get to the swanky desert yourself.
Two airlines are debuting nonstop flights to Palm Springs this winter. Virgin America now flies down there from San Francisco every day, and they’ve also added a direct flight from JFK (though you’ll have to stop at SFO on the way back).
Also, Palm Springs International airport will be bustling this winter with foreigners from the north, because Canadian carrier WestJet started offering service to the desert from Winnipeg…and Palm Springs is rrrreal exotic to those folks!
And where to stay once you’ve arrived, all ye desert newbies? I heartily endorse my latest desert obsession, the Colony Palms Hotel. It was originally started as a gangster getaway in the ’30s, with all the bootleg booze and loose women that entailed, and was recently redone, quite beautifully, as a luxury boutique resort. If you’re going to do the sun-drenched getaway thing, might as well go big, right?
