Morning Meme: “Political Animals” Serves Up a Gay White House Son, Closet Cases Bug Jake Shears, and Did Sir Elton Take Another Dig At Madonna?

A lot of celebrities had words to say about the passing of Donna Summer, but leave it to Sir Elton John to squeeze in a dig at (presumably) Madonna in his.Sir Elton John “I’m so sad. This woman was the queen of disco and so much more. Her records sound as good today as they ever did. That she has never been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a total disgrace, especially when I see the second-rate talent that has been inducted. She is a great friend to me and to the Elton John AIDS Foundation and I will miss her greatly.”

It’s common wisdom that Gene Roddenberry pushed to have actors of color like Nichelle Nichols on Star Trek to create his perfect future world, but was it actually NBC recruiting people of color like Nichols and George Takei to help launch their switch to color television?

Whoa! Joey Lawrence just inked a deal to appear with the Chippendales in Las Vegas. He’ll “sing, dance … the ’whole nine yards.'” If it’s actually nine yards, somebody Joey Lawrenceget me tickets!

Priscilla Queen of the Desert will be closing on Broadway after just a year, failing to recoup production costs. Maybe Nick Adams should have showed more skin?

Adam Lambert gave a really complete interview with the Dallas Voice, and one question was how he felt about always being asked about being a gay artist. “It gets a bit redundant. Gets a little old. It’s something I’ve made peace with; I’m trying to just look at it from the other point of view and realize that a lot of the questions are legitimate for someone who doesn’t understand. I think the way to progress and confront ignorance is information. You start talking about things and we get past them. So yeah, it gets a bit redundant, but I feel like at this point, it just comes with the territory that I’m trespassing on.”

The New York Times looks at the riddle of marriage equality polling, and why the numbers don’t always match up with the ballot box. Long and the short of it is, if you ask if they favor marriage equality or nothing, they lean towards marriage. But if you give the public civil unions as an option, it’s the top answer. Which explains a lot about North Carolina, where most people thought Amendment One only banned same-sex marriage, not civil unions.

Sens. Schumer and Casey are moving to see a rarely enforced law about people who renounce their citizenship to save taxes utilized for Eduardo Severin. The law can reimpose taxes on people like Severin and bar them from entering the United States.

Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters has a message for celebrities who skate around their sexuality. “If you’re going to be a closet case then just lie and say you’re straight. It bugs me when they sayJake Shears ’why are you asking me if I’m gay? It doesn’t matter.’ Well it matters a lot to the fifteen year-old at home who’s going through it. It’s a highly offensive statement and it makes me angry. I’d love to be a role model for gay men who feel they don’t fit in to what it means to be gay. You don’t need a perfect body and hair and love dance music and go out all night and do drugs. I’m a pretty decent guy. I’m the most level-headed in the band by default because everyone else is fu*king insane.”

Do you want to know who’s staying on Glee next year? You may actually scream at the answer.

Much has been said about Chicago Cubs owner Joe Ricketts name being attached to a plan to smear President Obama as a “black metrosexual Abe Lincoln.” Even before Andy noticed over at Towleroad, I was stunned because Joe’s daughter Laura is a lesbian, the first to be a part owner of a MLB team. Ricketts has disavowed the plan, but still opposed Obama.

Manny Pacquaio has come out and said that he doesn’t hate gay people, he just opposes gay marriage. Arguably the media could have done a better job with fact checking, but I do know that David Badash tried to get a statement and was ignored, so maybe ESPN and USA Today were as well. I’m still baffled that the original reporter would insert a Leviticus quote into the story in that way. I’m not exactly a Pulitzer Prize winner, and I know better than that.

iCarlyThree of the Wiggles are retiring, but that means we get new Wiggles, and this time one of them is a woman.

Sharp eyes have concluded from the trailer for Prometheus that it takes place in the same universe as Firefly.

Sadly, iCarly is coming to an end after five years of being the Nickelodeon show with the gayest sensibility. All of the cast have new projects for the network except Miranda Cosgrove, who’s going to college instead.

Morgan Freeman has joined Michael Douglas and Robert De Niro in Last Vegas, which to me sounds like The Hangover with senior citizens.

The Obama administration has released new rules governing federal prisons and detention facilities that include new protections and guidelines for women and GLBT persons.

The CW is creating an online component to their new shows that sounds a lot like those old choose-your-own-adventure books we read as kids. It’s unclear if they mean different scenes will be filmed and recut in real time, or if plots will be put up to votes in advance, but things like whether two people kiss could be in the hands of America. It’s a shame the same option doesn’t exist on Glee.

America’s Next Top Model has replaced Andre Leon Tulley and Jay Manuel with male supermodel Rob Evans and sexy Johnny Wujek. A little time with Google Image Search is useful forRob Evans understanding their qualifications. For anything.

Taylor Swift has donated $4 million to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which will fund the Taylor Swift Education Center, where young musicians will be taught to make a surprised face about everything.

Well, the sad news is that Gloria Estefan doesn’t sing in the season finale for Glee. But she is supportive of her daughter, and this isn’t the first she’s hearing of her dating Brittany. One thing that kind of bothers me is continuity – if Santana’s father is a doctor, why do they live in the rough side of town?

Entertainment Weekly has a cover story with Joe Manganiello, Matthew McConaughey, Channing Tatum and Matt Bomer about being in Magic Mike, and it’s worth a read for a lot of reasons, and you should buy it. But EW specifically asked the four guys what their “significant others” thought of them stripping down. Matt Bomer said “Simon was totally cool with it. He’s totally supportive of me as an artist. He’s like, “Go do your thing and let me know how it goes when you get home.”

Paging Dr. Love! Paging Dr. Love!

I’m not familiar with Josh Barnett, who is evidently an MMA fighter and a professional wrestler who goes by the name of The Warmaster, but he certainly got my attention when Katee Sackhoff tweeted this photo of him.

I wouldn’t mind going a few rounds with him

My future ex-husband Russell Tovey hanging with Liam Murphy at the Scissor Sisters concert

Eddie McClintock is hanging out with Pooch Hall

Joel Watson is in the process of relaunching what was one of my favorite webcomics, HijINKS Ensue. As he became a dad, he hung out less with his real friends, and those are the people the comics characters are based on, so the whole thing came from his voice for a while. Now he’s making an effort to differentiate the characters again, including his gay buddy Josh, who drops some serious reality on House.

Thanks again to Joel for reprint permission

Yesterday in Briefs we showed you the video from Ben Cohen’s Stand Up Foundation launch in the UK. Here’s a shot of him with the adorable Prince Harry. After I posted this on Tumblr, some folks said this was significant, because it was unusual for the royals to get involved in social issues beyond their assigned charities. I have no idea if this is true, but it sounds right

Unless the uniforms mean they’re on opposing sides of the issue

I know this is a lowbrow start to the videos, but I laughed my ass off at this. It’s just so perfect, visually. The lyrics are NSFW, but I doubt anyone can hear them over your laughter.

Bob Marshall was the GOP delegate that stopped a qualified gay prosecutor from being appointed to the bench in Virginia. He evidently thinks we’re all like the above video, because he thinks sodomy is not a civil right. Maybe not an enumerated one, but I think it’s implied.

Don’t lose your cool over the source of this preview from Mrs. Eastwood and Company, the new E! reality series with Clint’s family as they manage a South African boy band. Because you need to watch this as the band discusses whether or not Eduardo should come out as gay. It’s heartbreaking. We’ve got an interview with Eduardo in the works.

Why do puppies never fall from the sky and land in my lap? That would be a sign for sure. Talk about raining cats and dogs. Minus the cats, although they probably land on their feet and saunter away like nothing happened.

Betty Bowers, America’s Best Christian, sits down to talk with Anne Romney about the hard lean times in her life.

I need to warn you that this video is probably NSFW, since it’s about what women won’t let in their vaginas. It’s not a normal topic around here, but they do bring up some interesting standards. So what won’t you let inside you?

I admit, I have zero desire to see Rock of Ages. The cast doesn’t do much for me, and it just looks ridiculous, and not in a good way. But even I can appreciate Mary J. Blige belting out “Any Way You Want It.”

I was only vaguely aware of the USA miniseries Political Animals. It has a truly astonishing cast, with Sigourney Weaver, James Wolk, Adrian Pasdar, and now I realize Sebastian Stan. And it’s now on our radar here at AfterElton, because it looks like Stan is playing another gay prince, albeit this time the American kind. The show follows Weaver as the current Secretary of State, having raised her family in the White House with her philandering husband president back then, and measures the toll the experience put on their family. Sorry about the tiny embed, but the system USA uses is weird. Click the full screen button to watch.

In The Words, Bradley Cooper is a writer who gets his big break, but with stolen words, and has his entire future put in jeopardy.

I’m unaware of Mike Munich’s work, but he gives Johnny McGovern a run for his money for hot guys shaking their bodies in this promotion for his new album and show in Las Vegas.

Jane Lynch guested on the Rachel Maddow Show, and she wants Republicans to understand that even if they won’t get behind marriage equality because it’s the right thing to do, they should get behind it because there’s a fortune to be made from gay weddings. Her banter about the issues with Rachel after her bit is priceless. I love these ladies.

Patton Oswalt goes in search of the elusive internet troll in his native habitat. Coming from someone other than Oswalt this could have crossed some lines, but he can make it work because he’s earned it.

Opinionated. You'll love to hate me
