Morning Meme: The Rainbow Honor Walk, Remembering Brendan Burke, NOM Supports Equality, and More!

*NOTE Ed Kennedy is currently experiencing technical difficulties (the rumor is that a hairball mysteriously found its way into his laptop and short circuited it), so I’ll be presenting abbreviated versions of the meme today and this weekend. And if I’m doing the Meme, you know what means – 80’s-themed headers! Above you can see ten of my favorite 80’s movies. How many can you name? If no one gets them all, I’ll reveal the answers in today’s Briefs.

Moving from the 80’s to the 90’s, Sophie B. Hawkins was one of the shining lights in an otherwise dull, dank decade, but now she’s seriously disappointed me. Why, Sophie? Paula Cole would never stoop so low.

Don’t tell Ed, but here’s … Cute Boys With Cats. (h/t to ans).

Barney Frank has announced his reelection bid, and that he won’t be running against Scott Brown for a Senate seat as was rumored.

Fourteen men and 6 women have been named as the inaugural honorees for the Rainbow Honor Walk in San Francisco’s Castro district. Among those selected are disco legend Sylvester, artist Keith Haring, and journalist Randy Shilts.

Remember the mom who caught hell for letting her son dress up as Scooby-Doo’s Daphne for Halloween? She has some strong words for her disapproving pastor. This lady rocks!

Dot429 interviews Simon Doonan about his new position at Barney’s, and the negative press surrounding it.

Five minutes with Dan Savage.

Elton John is urging tour mate Billy Joel to get help: “We’ve had so many canceled tours because of illnesses and various other things, alcoholism.” Billy responded with, “Elton is just being Elton.”

We’ve already got Grindr, but apparently that’s not enough, because there’s a new gaydar app coming out named “GuySpy” with the subtle tag lines “Show me, tell me, meet me,” “Any where, any place, any how,” and “Time to play, choose your way.” What I find absolutely hilarious is that one of the random couples on the site’s sideshow is Luke and Noah from As The World Turns

Take your lover by the hand, speak in tongues and understand..

With the big football thingy coming up this weekend (go Bills!), The Dallas Voice talks to Brian Sims, Esera Tuaolo, and Dave Kopay about when and if an active NFL player will ever come out.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, Outsports has all the info on the real competition: The Battle of the Hair. Personally, I’m rooting for Pittsburgh Steeler safety Troy Polamalu and his Cher circa Suspect hair.

Frameline has announced the recipients of its annual Frameline Completion Fund, and awarded money to seven films, including Activist: The Times of Vito Russo, about one of the pioneers of gay activism and author of The Celluloid Closet, and Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same, about lesbian space aliens.

Finally, tomorrow marks the anniversary of the untimely death of Brendan Burke. Brendan’s coming out had an enormous impact in the world of pro hockey (his dad is the president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs), and his death sent shock waves around the sport. A year after his death, his brother Patrick speaks about his legacy.

A couple of tweets from AE favorites. First up, Nick Adams.

Next, Adam Lambert reboots for a cause.

Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal posted this comic yesterday.

NOM thought it was a hilarious anti-gay jab, and hotlinked it on their site. SMBC artist Zach Weiner didn’t take too kindly to it, and swapped out the image. This is what the NOM page ended up looking like. Kudos to Zach for bringing enlightenment to the NOM site, if only for a moment (it’s since been taken down, of course.)

Ed works with tires all day, so I’d like to dedicate this video to him. It’s the trailer for the upcoming horror spoof(?) Rubber. Yes, it’s an actual movie. And yes, Ed. It’s coming for you.

The Weather Channel’s Jim Cantore is easily impressed. Calm down, dude.

Below you can see Jon Stewart and Justin Beiber in Vice-Versa 2.
