"Mortal Kombat" Adds First Gay Character

The makers of Mortal Kombat has struck a body blow for diversity by adding a gay character to Mortal Kombat X, the next version of the legendary fighting game.

The character, Kung Jin, is a thief-turned-monk who is also a member of a Special Forces Unit and an expert archer. In a series of flashback sequences, though, players learn Kung is a closeted gay man.

In Chapter 4, when Raiden tells him to joint the Shaolin monks, Kung replies, "I can't... They won't accept..."

Raiden replies, "They care only of what is in your heart, not whom your heart desires."

The game's cinematic director, Dominic Cianciolo, confirmed the character's sexuality in a tweet, writing. "I see people are picking up on the subtle exposition contained in Kung Jin's flashback—Glad we have observant fans!"

Released this week, Mortal Kombat X is just the latest in a growing number of games that are including LGBT characters, relationships and story lines—Mass Effect and Final Fantasy, for example, have both added same-sex marriage options to new releases.
