Most Haunted Chicago

Snappy, modern, and oh so friendly, Chicago is one of the best cities in America. One often feels like a character in a screwball comedy in this city, with its snazzy businessmen, cool artists and history of gangsters, violence, fires, jazz and gin. But, like a black and white movie, figures flick across this picturesque metropolis, spirits that just can’t leave the toddling town behind.

Bachelor's Grove: This tiny, abandoned, weed covered cemetery has been vandalized and ransacked, kids have drag raced around it, satanic members have desecrated it, and the souls there entombed are not taking it anymore! Considered one of the most haunted places in America, Bachelor’s Grove is home to a spectral house that appears to cover the cemetery, blue orbs, eerie noises, a white lady, phantom cars and multiple shadowy figures. The adjacent pond is said to have been a dumping spot used by Al Capone. A black dog supposedly darts around the cemetery. Quite the full house!

Hull House: When progressive hero Jane Addams moved into Hull House to start her philanthropic school and home for women, it was already haunted by the late Mrs. Hull. Addams herself witnessed a lady walking in the front bedroom and spoke of creepy night noises. Then there is the devil baby, a child supposedly born with scales and pointed ears to a (gasp) atheist, who Jane baptized and attempted to save. Her efforts were futile and his face still leers out of attic windows, terrifying all who pass by. So much for the greater good.

Resurrection Cemetery:  Resurrection Mary is a beautiful young woman with bobbed blond hair wearing a white dress and dancing shoes. She is often seen walking Archer Avenue, sometimes getting rides, occasionally going to nightclubs with gentlemen and being dropped off by Resurrection Cemetery. She has been dead since the 1930s. It is said she had a fight with her boyfriend at the Oh Henry Nightclub, and was hit by a car while walking home. Yet another reason to never pick up hitchhikers.

Victory Gardens: We all know the story: Johnny Depp, I mean John Dillinger, met his bloody end after catching the movie Manhattan Melodrama at the Biography Theater. Now a space showcasing live productions, patrons have felt cold spots and seen ghostly theatergoers. The most activity is in the alley next to the theater, where a shadowy, bluish figure is seen tripping as it runs away.

Harpo Studios: Even Oprah can’t control the other side. In 1915 a ship named The Eastland sank in the Chicago River, and over 800 souls lost their lives. Many of the dead and injured were taken to the 2nd Regiment Armory, now the site of Harpo Studios. Oprah’s armies have reported numerous hauntings, including a “grey lady” in Edwardian garb, marching feet, people laughing and crying, doors slamming shut and folks whispering. Perhaps they are gossiping about how terrible the new Oprah network is. Ryan and Tatum? Really? Now that’s a scary shipwreck. (110 N Carpenter St.)
