Stuart Hatton, the reigning Mr Gay UK, has been named Mr Gay World 2014. At a ceremony in Rome, the 28-year-old from South Shields beat Cyprus’s Kiriakos Spanos, who came in second place, and Ireland’s Robert Lowlor, who claimed third.
“I WON MR GAY WORLD!” Hatton declared on Twitter. “This is just the beginning. Thanks to everyone who believed and supported my equality campaign #watchthisspace.”
A model and dance teacher at his family’s studio, Hatton beat challengers from 32 different countries in a variety of challenges, including swimsuit modeling, art and knowledge of LGBT rights and equality.
“I am now able to use my voice to help those in countries around the world who have no voice or equality rights, such as people in Malaysia and Iran,” he said. “We are all human, and all gay people around the world deserve the same human rights. This is just the beginning.”
